The International Institute for Asian Studies (IIAS) is a research and exchange platform based at Leiden University in the Netherlands. The objective of the institute is to encourage the multidisciplinary and comparative study of Asia and to promote national and international co-operation. It acts as an interface between academic and non-academic partners including cultural, social and policy organisations. IIAS was jointly established in 1993 by the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW), Leiden University, the Universiteit van Amsterdam (UVA) and the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU). ==Clearinghouse of knowledge and information== The IIAS functions as a clearinghouse of knowledge and information and strives to contributes to the cultural rapprochement between Asia and Europe. It provides information services, constructs international networks, and sets up international cooperative projects and research programmes. At a broader level, IIAS links up with other groups in society, such as business people, policy makers, and the media by making expertise on Asia available to non-academic organizations through updates, consultancy services, and the like.
